WHY NOW?

The fall of 2026 marks two milestones in Jansen’s life and career. First, this landmark publication will celebrate four decades (beginning 1986) of artistic production by Marcus Jansen…tracing an extraordinary trajectory from the raw immediacy of 1980s graffiti culture to a mature, globally recognized painterly practice. This anniversary volume marks not only a celebration of longevity, but a sustained inquiry into the social, political, and psychological terrains that have defined Jansen’s oeuvre.

Second, 2026 also marks the 20th anniversary of Jansen’s “discovery” by Jerome Donson, director of traveling exhibitions at New York's Museum of Modern Art. Donson compared Jansen’s art to that of the socio-critical Ashcan School, hailing him as the innovator of a modern expressionism (See Modern Urban Expressionism; The Art of Marcus Antonius Jansen, 2006).
